Afterglow
Afterglow is a series of works by Francesco Schiazza, begun in 2018 and completed in 2021. The series includes mixed media paintings on canvas and paper, as well as several polyptychs and artist books.
The term «afterglow» refers to the residual light in the atmosphere after the sun has set. The atmosphere of these paintings does not resonate with the brightness of midday, but rather with a sunless light; long, elusive shadows that resist definitive meaning.
Afterglow explores the idea of renouncing naming, definition, and even the desire to belong to a clearly defined reality.
Each layer of colour is carefully applied to create shapes that are complete and pure in themselves. Over time, as new layers are added, these forms blend with both the new and the old, causing the surface to ripple, submerge, and give the illusion of shapes that are never fully resolved. In this way, certain forms of colour may disappear, only to resurface elsewhere, or perhaps never reappear at all.
